The Open Access (OA) system is based on the principle that the results of publicly funded research must be available. Scientific communication must be shared immediately and freely accessible.
The orange symbol is used when the article is published in an open access journal. The green symbol is used when the author chooses to make their manuscript (not the published version) available in an institutional or other subject repository.
The gold symbol refers to publication in open access journals that usually charge a fee (Gold OA).
Some journals are hybrid open-access and restricted-access journals, which means that it is necessary to check the symbol for each individual article.
